Having completed the course the students have the understanding of how garments and accessories with embedded electronics and functional textiles are designed. They have the basic skills to integrate soft materials with technology, and to implement a design process in practice. The students also know the possibilities and limitations related to measuring sensory data from the human body, and understand the critical and ethical aspects of it. The students have a general understanding of the possibilities of wearable technology and have the skills to form their own concepts.
The course consists of lectures on wearable technology and its applications, from the design, art, technology and business points of view. Aspects of human physiology and how sensors and other electronics are adapted to it are brought up. The use of the Arduino micro controller and its programming are taught to all participants, however the actual level of technical difficulty of the project works may depend on the background of students. The project teams (consisting of 2-3 students) will be formed in such a way that there are students of different backgrounds.
Working methods: Lectures, discussions within a group, practical experiments, self-initiated investigations, and (recommended) collaboration with others and possible other disciplines.
Evaluation: Activity, attendance, individual and group assignments
Max. 12 students. Open for all master students in the order of registration. First priority given for master’s degree students in Textile Art and Design. Participation in first lecture is obligatory for confirming the registration.
